A study of 5-hydroxytryptamine liberation in the blood of pregnant rabbit and fetus

Abstract
The role of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) has not been clarified yet in spite of many investigations:
However, some of the physiologic, biochemical and pharmacological properties were established.
Author has carried out the determination of 5-HT in the blood of pregnant rabbit and fetus utilizing the bioassy technique. The blood 5-HT contents were measured in mother rabbit and fetus of each following group.
1. The 28th day of pregnancy.
2. Aspirin or salicylamide were administered orally on the 28th day of pregnancy.
3. Aspirin or salicylamide were administered orally on the 28th day of pregnant rabbit which
had been actively sensitized during pregnancy with aspiryl egg albumin.
4. Aspirin or salicylamide were administered orally on the 28th day of pregnant rabbit which had been actively sensitized before mating with aspiryl egg albumin.
The results obtained were as. follows:
1) The detectable amount of 5-HT were measured in the blood of pregnant rabbit and fetus of the 28th pregnancy day.
2) The blood 5-HT content of mother rabbit were increased by aspirin administration and were decreased by salicylamide administration. And blood 5-HT content of fetus showed no distinct change by aspirin or salicylamide administration.
3) There was some resemblence between aspirin and salicylamide on the 5-HT liberation in blood of both maternal and fetal rabbit which had been actively sensitized during pregnancy.,
4) There was no interrelationship between aspirin and salicylamide on the 5-HT liberation in the blood of maternal and fetal rabbit which had been actively sensitized before mating.
